Nadya Araujo Guimarães holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from the University of Brasília (1971), a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Brasília (1974), a Ph.D. in Sociology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (1983), a postdoctoral fellowship from SPURS—Special Program on Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS)—at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1993–1994), and a professorship in Sociology of Work from the University of São Paulo (2002). She is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. A faculty member in the Department of Sociology at the University of São Paulo (since 1999), she has been a Full Professor of Sociology of Work (since 2008). She also taught in the sociology departments at the University of Brasília (1971–1973) and the Federal University of Bahia (1974–1995). She was a Visiting Professor in the Program in Latin American Studies at Princeton University (2007), a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (2018), and a Guest Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris (2019). She is a CNPq I-A Researcher, affiliated with the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP), since 1995, having been part of the team at the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) between 2002 and 2017, where she served as Director of the National Institute for Metropolitan Studies (CNPq/MCT Program) from 2009 to 2012. She is also an associate researcher at the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick (UK). She is a member of the Steering Committee of the International and Interdisciplinary Network “Marché du Travail et Genre,” MAGE (Paris, France). She was an associate researcher at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (ORSTOM) in France (1989–1991) and a Visiting Researcher at the Princeton Institute on International and Regional Studies (2008) in the United States, as well as at the Centre for Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge, England (2016/2017). She served on scientific evaluation committees in Brazil (such as the Advisory Committee of CNPq/Sociology, in 1989–91 and 2003–05) and abroad (such as the Regional Advisory Panel for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Social Sciences Research Council/SSRC, USA, in 2000–2001). She served as Editor-in-Chief of: Cadernos CRH (1989–2001) and Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios del Trabajo (1996–1998), as well as a member of the Editorial Board of Tempo Social (2003–2009) and the Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios del Trabajo (2010–2014). Based on her research experience in Economic and Labor Sociology, she has published and supervised research on topics such as: economic change, firm restructuring, and workers’ career trajectories; gender and racial inequalities in the labor market and workplaces; unemployment, job search, and job placement mechanisms; new employment relationships and the challenges of theorizing them; care work and female care workers.
